Julia Marshall, publisher at Gecko Press and PANZ representative on the publishing course industry advisory committee, reports on the end-of-year celebration from the 2014 programme.
At the recent graduation of Whitireia publishing students for 2014, many publishers and supporters of the course gathered in Wellington to celebrate the students and the staff, and admire the works produced – it was a lovely occasion, as always. Gecko Press absolutely relies on the Whitireia publishing course to supply us with energetic, willing and personable students to work two afternoons a week (we would have them more often if they weren’t so busy). This year two students ‘job-shared’ and Gecko Press was very proud that ‘our students’ were both awarded internships. We enjoyed our work placement students too – as always, it seems this year’s students were a very strong bunch.
This must be testimony to the teaching of Rachel Lawson, Stephen Minchin and the rest of the staff, supported by Dean Kaye Jujnovich – the students do appear to come out very well, year after year.
I also thoroughly enjoy being the PANZ representative on the Whitireia publishing course advisory committee: I feel proud of all the students for choosing publishing as their industry, and I look forward to the usual suitably positive statistics regards job placements at the next advisory committee meeting.
