In 2014 publishing students worked on Adrienne’s Jansen’s fourth novel, A Line of Sight. Here they describe the remarkably easy process of commissioning a cover from one of New Zealand’s best-known book designers.
To capture a book’s tone, genre and subject in a single graphic is an extremely hard task, but that’s what publishers are asking for when commissioning a cover design. Not only that, they’re asking the designer to come up with a cover that will make the book jump out at readers.
We were thrilled to get Sarah Maxey on board to design the cover for A Line of Sight. We presented two concepts to her, and she helped us to select the one that captured the spirit of the book and utilised her strength as a designer.
In the end we went with the first rough Sarah presented us. It required very few changes, and we now have a fit-for-print cover that has gained compliments from all who have seen it – and now you can be the judges!
